Bamboo is strong, very strong. It has the compressive strength of concrete and the strength-to-weight ratio of steel. No wonder the construction  industry still uses the bamboo. In Indonesia, you will often see large scaffolding made from bamboo. But also support structures when constructing buildings or houses. From Sumatra to West Papua, via Java and Bali, bamboo is a key material in the archipelago.

But what is it exactly? Bamboo is a plant that is native to regions of Asia with a tropical climate. It grows quickly. And, depending on the species, bamboo can reach 20 to 30 meters in height! For 3 to 5 years, the plant increases its thickness and diameter. On a bamboo clump, an average of 20 to 30 bamboo stems can be cut each year. After cutting about 50 centimeters from the ground, another shoot will develop naturally.

What are its limits? The bamboo is subject to moisture, sun and parasites. Without proper treatment, the bamboo will last only a few years. However, it can last for decades with a proper maintenance. Washing, drying, grooming by using natural treatments are essential to make it technically more resistant.

Today, the architecture industry still relies on Bamboo. New techniques and new know-how are also making it possible to build ever larger and more ambitious structures. It is also recognized that bamboo buildings, which are more flexible, are more resistant to earthquakes.

Its other uses are numerous (decorative sculptures, furniture, musical instruments, accessories and decoration). In addition, bamboo is an alternative to many materials. It is therefore part of a logic of respect for the environment and sustainability. Every piece, object or construction made of bamboo saves a tree.

Bamboo cultivation in Indonesia also benefits local communities who derive long-term employment and economic resources.
